Davis

Veterinarians and caregivers at UC Davis bid farewell Monday to the faceless wonder dog who drew international attention after she leaped on a speeding motorcycle and saved two girls from being run over in the Philippines.

The muzzle-less mongrel named Kabang chewed treats, tossed around a squeaky toy and wagged her tail furiously after she was given a clean bill of health by specialists at the William R. Pritchard Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital at UC Davis.

The black and tan shepherd-type dog, whose face now looks more like that of a pug, seemed amazingly jolly after her eight-month ordeal, which included extensive treatment for cancer and heartworm, spaying, vaccinations and the insertion of an identity chip in her shoulder, in addition to surgery to close the grisly wound on her face.

Kabang was released to her Filipino veterinarian, Anton Lim, who will escort her back to the Philippines on Thursday.

“She is still not a pretty dog, but she is a happy dog,” said Frank Verstraete, the chief of dentistry and oral surgery at the hospital, explaining their surgical handiwork, which did not include cosmetic reconstruction of the dog’s missing upper jaw. “We opted for function and comfort as our primary goal.”

Kabang became an international sensation in December 2011 when she reportedly threw herself onto a motorcycle and stopped it from hitting her master’s daughter and niece in Zamboanga City. But the motorcycle’s spokes sheared off much of the plucky pooch’s face.

Word quickly spread throughout the Philippines about the heroics of the skinny mixed-breed known as an aspin, a kind of street dog often scorned in the Philippines, where purebreds are preferred.

Fundraising campaign

News of the “hero dog” soon spread around the world, and a grassroots fundraising campaign to get her the wound-closing surgery started after photographs of her gruesome injury began to circulate.

Kabang was brought to the veterinary hospital in October 2012 after donations from 20 countries poured in, enough to pay for airfare and treatment.

Facebook and Twitter accounts, the website careforkabang.com and pet lovers’ blogs were an integral part of the effort, and the money keeps flowing in. To date, more than $20,000 has been raised.

There has been plenty of criticism. Complaints to the hospital and on the Internet objected to the spending of so much money on a single dog when the public could be fighting war, hunger, terrorism and global warming.

Even some of the veterinarians at the hospital were conflicted when they saw the gaping, exposed tissue and nasal cavities, which extended “almost to the point of entering into the brain,” said Dr. Boaz Arzi, the surgeon.

“Some of my colleagues said, ‘This is beyond repair,’ ” and that euthanasia would be the most humane approach, Verstraete said.

How she survived in the first place “is something we asked ourselves. The amount of blood loss this dog must have sustained was tremendous, but somehow she did survive.”

Arzi said the decision to operate was made by the owner, Rudy Bunggal, who representatives say not only loves Kabang, but believes she was God-sent.

The 57-year-old native Visayan found her as a puppy in a swamp near Zamboanga. The dog and Bunggal’s daughter, Dina, 11, and niece, Princess, 3, were soon inseparable.

Good Samaritans shocked by new dog flipping scams

adminAlerts Leave a Comment

Lost or stolen family pets are being put up for sale online by people trying to make a quick buck.

“Dog-Flipping” – if you do not know the phrase by now, get used to hearing it again, and again. Here is how it works – on social media sites like Craigslist, there are posts saying someone found a lost dog. What a dog flipper does is say that dog is theirs, then they turn right around and sell it. A local pet owner said she was a victim.

Her dog was lost, found and is now microchipped.

“So happy that we got her back now,” said dog owner Leisa Waggoner.

It was a reunion with Rosie the dog, that almost did not happen. The black miniature schnauzer was on an electric fence. She wandered off when someone cut the line while mowing.

Rosie was found, then wound up at a vet’s office in Beech Grove. That was when Wiley Brown got the call.

“‘We know this is your dog, it looks just like her.’ I said, ‘that is great, my family will be ecstatic,’” said Brown.

But the dog did not belong to the Browns. They posted “Dog Found” messages on Indy Lost Pet Alert and Craigslist. It did not take long for someone to come forward, with a sad story, and claim the dog.

“I am pregnant, I have a 1-year-old, I have not had time to get pictures on my phone,” Brown said he was told over the phone. “I do not have anything to send you, but it does look like my dog, Ginger.”

So after hearing the hard-luck story of a dog lost and now found, the Brown family brought the dog and met the woman in a parking lot. Even after reuniting “Ginger” with her rightful owner, something still did not feel right.

“I never thought somebody would ‘flip’ a dog, so it really did not come up in my mind,” said Brown. “I just thought she was happy to see her. She said, ‘Oh Ginger.’”

Then another call that changed everything, another family said the dog was theirs.

“They had pictures of the dog,” said Brown. “They described everything about her, even the white patch of fur on her chest. We just knew it was their dog.”

The Browns checked Craigslist again. The dog they had returned was now for sale.

“We could believe it, but at the same time it was like, ‘Why would someone actually do that?’” said Brown.

Dog flipping, claiming a dog as your own then selling it to make money, is on the rise.

“Unfortunately dog flipping in a new source of revenue for people,” said Danielle Beck o Indy Lost Pet Alert. “They do not think about the pets someone’s family member, but a source of let’s try to re-home this pet for $25 on Craigslist. Let’s go for $50.”

“We will put things aside and we will give you $100,” Brown said he told the woman. “We know who the real owners are, we just want to be able to give them their dog back. She said, ‘No, this is my dog.’ We said okay, $200. She said, ‘$250 and I will do it.’”

They met up at the parking lot again.

Logan City man Brian Railton, who walked almost 300km over eight weeks searching for his lost dog Benji, has been reunited with his companion.

The kelpie-border collie cross escaped his yard at Kingston, south of Brisbane, when he was spooked by a storm on March 24.

Every day since then, Mr Railton, 70, who suffers from Parkinson’s disease, walked from his home to the council’s animal management centre in the hope of finding his best mate, who would usually be walking by his side.

With the help of his son Malcolm, Mr Railton hung posters and searched high and low until receiving the call he had been waiting for last Friday.

“We were nearly at the point of giving up, we were talking about getting another dog because it was very stressful for dad,” Malcolm Railton said.

“I got the call from the pound and dad could hear me on the phone and was so excited to bring him home.

“We had a celebration and took him to McDonald’s for an ice-cream and he stole half of dad’s as well.”

Justin Bieber May Have Gotten a Pet Kitten

Justin Bieber allegedly got a new pet

Given his history with animals, many wonder why Justin Bieber would even think about getting a new pet.

I mean, there was the hamster that died, the boa constrictor that was auctioned off for charity and the monkey that got confiscated by German authorities.

Still, it seems that the pop star did more than just toy with the idea of welcoming a new animal into his life: he went ahead and got one.

An adorable-looking Persian kitten, to be more precise.

Pictures posted on Justin Bieber’s Instagram account show this kitten lounging on what appears to be the seat of a car.

“This chick thinks she’s a model,” one of the captions reportedly reads.

Well, if it’s true that this kitten is Justin’s new pet, I can only wish it the best of luck and hope that its fate will be somewhat different from that of all the other animals the pop star has called his BFFs over the years.

Court Decision May Allow Students to Bring Pets to School With them

Pending the decision in a lawsuit filed by the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) against the University of Nebraska, students could be allowed to have their pets live with them in their dorm rooms.

On behalf of Brittany Hamilton, HUD sued the University of Nebraska at Kearney (UNK) for not allowing her to have her dog live in her dorm room with her. Hamilton said she wanted her dog in her room to assist with her anxiety and depression.

HUD is suing on the grounds of a violation of Hamilton’s rights under the Fair Housing Act (FHA). The rule states that it is unlawful to deny dwelling to a person based on their “handicap.” It also states that eligible persons may accommodate a wide array of “assistance animals.”

“Assistance animals” go far beyond typical service animals (e.g., seeing-eye dogs) as they include animals that provide mental or emotional support.

UNK argues that their on-campus accommodations should not be considered a “dwelling” as defined by the FHA and because the housing is only temporary. UNK argued further that their accommodations are not for residential purposes, but rather for educational purposes.

Oklahoma Tornado Survivor Finds Missing Dog During Live Interview

Barbara Garcia, a resident of Moore, Oklahoma, who survived yesterday’s potentially historic tornado, was being interviewed by CBS News about riding out the storm in the bathroom of her former home.

Garcia was holding on to her dog when the winds came, but after the walls fell down the two separated, and she had been unable to locate him since.

Then, in the middle of the interview, little “Toto” suddenly emerged from the rubble, and the two were reunited in the most tearjerking of fashions.

“Well I got God to answer one prayer to let me be okay, but he answered both of them,” Garcia said.

The heartbreaking stories behind 5 adorable bionic dogs

Tortured, shot at, or left to die, these brave pups each got a new lease on life with the help of artificial limbs

Naki’o. (Reuters)

When Naki’o was a puppy, he was found, along with his litter mates and dead mother, abandoned in a foreclosed home in Nebraska. Naki’o was literally frozen into a puddle on the floor, and had to have all four of his paws and part of his tail amputated as a result. A Colorado Springs veterinary assistant named Christine Pace got wind of the dog’s woeful story and was so taken that she adopted the severely handicapped puppy. At first, Naki’o was able get around on his stumps, but as he grew, his weight limited his activity. Pace raised enough money to get him outfitted with prosthetic limbs for his back legs, which suffered the worse damage. Seeing that the playful pup managed so well on his bionic paws, Martin and Amy Kaufman of Orthopets created a pair of front-leg prosthesis as well. Pay de Limon. (Reuters)

In 2011, Pay de Limon was reportedly the victim of a Mexican drug gang assault. It’s believed that Mexico City gang members used the Belgian shepherd mix — whose name means lemon pie in English — as practice for other gruesome crimes. They reportedly cut off his two front paws to test out intimidation tactics they would later use on human hands. The dog was left in the trash to die, and a passerby heard his cries and took him to Milagros Caninos, a local sanctuary for abused animals. The staff nursed Pay de Limon back to health and raised more than $6,000 through donations to pay for two front-leg prosthetic limbs. He’s now accustomed to his new legs and can be seen happily trotting around the sanctuary like any other dog. (REUTERS/Tomas Bravo)

Abayed. (Reuters)

Abayed was once a working sheepdog in Jordan. But in 2011, a stranger, mistaking him for a stray, shot Abayed and paralyzed his hind legs. His owner found the howling dog and took him to a local animal shelter, where the medics said it was clear the dog had a will to live. Instead of putting him down, the shelter took the handicapped dog in as their own and eventually outfitted him with a pair of wheeled legs. The harness gives the former shepherding dog the freedom to roam the shelter’s grounds, wrangling the occasional rogue sheep or goat just for the fun of it. (IMAGE: REUTERS/Ali Jarekji)
