Dogs can love the winter. There are few more heart warming images than a happy dog playing in the snow with his owner. However, as with all animals, winter can be a time of discomfort for dogs and even danger. Here are some tips on keeping your dog safe, happy and healthy during the colder months.
Do not leave your dog alone outside
Many people have outdoor dogs, and they can be happy and healthy… if the weather conditions are right. Dogs may have fur but that does not mean they are immune to cold. Chances are, if it’s too much for you to be out in the cold, then it is probably too chilly for your dog too. There have been some tragic cases of outdoor dogs freezing to death. If this happens to your dog, you are not only neglectful and heartless but you could face felony animal cruelty charges.
Dress him up on walks
Certain types of dog, including short haired dogs, small breeds or elderly dogs, cope less well in the cold than humans. If this applies to your dog, or if you notice him showing signs of discomfort, consider getting him a dog sweater. You may think that dog clothing is for silly people who want to make their dog into a fashion accessory, but if your dog is uncomfortable in the cold giving him a sweater could greatly contribute towards his safety and sense of well-being. Even if you’ve dressed him up, you should still keep an eye in cold weather. Look out for the early signs of frostbite such as firm, waxy skin and blisters.
Consider exercising your dog indoors
There may be cases where it is simply not safe for you or your dog to go out for a walk. However, even in these cases, your dog still needs exercise and stimulation. Although nothing beats an outdoor walk it is definitely possible to give your dog a workout indoors. There are many fun games you can play with balls such as fetch or doggie soccer. Games with tug of war toys and chew toys can also be fun and you can even train your dog to play hide and seek! That can be a lot of fun for both you and your dog to brighten up a dull winter day when you are stuck inside.
As always, the secret to a happy healthy dog is understanding his needs and being aware of him. If you pay attention and put the time in, there is no reason why your dog can’t enjoy the winter as much as any other season. You may also have fun spending time with your dog in a different way to usual! Take care in the cold.
