Boston MSPCA: Pets and pain – what you should know

adminAlerts Leave a Comment

For many of us our pets are not just companion animals but bona fide members of our family, whose wellbeing we regard as a top priority. That’s why the notion that a beloved animal can be suffering from chronic pain, without the ability to tell us what’s wrong, is so disturbing. The reality is that dogs, cats and other pets suffer greatly from pain – whether it’s pain associated with injury, surgery or illness — and identifying and treating the pain is key to their quality of life.

Identifying Pain

Pain behaviors are different in every species, and can be specific to each individual. Additionally, dogs and cats go to great lengths to hide their pain as part of their evolutionary past — when demonstrating that they were in pain could make them vulnerable to attack from other animals. People expect animals to cry or vocalize when in pain, but they usually only do this with severe acute pain, like breaking a bone. Pets are generally quiet and stoic when in pain.

In order to diagnose pain in patients who cannot “tell” us what they’re feeling, today’s veterinary specialists have to resort to indirect methods of pain assessment. These methods rely on noting changes in functional movements (i.e. “my dog can’t jump on the bed anymore”). And sometimes we have to assume pain is present when we diagnose a disease and treat for the expected level of pain.

Family dog sniffs out baby abuser, hidden tape leads to confession

adminAlerts Leave a Comment

A couple says their dog sniffed out a baby abuser in their home, the woman who was supposed to be caring for their seven month old son.

The babysitter, 22-year-old Alexis Khan pleaded guilty to assault and battery Monday afternoon in Charleston County Circuit Court.

Benjamin and Hope Jordan hired Khan to babysit their son Finn last year after they moved to Charleston. They say Khan came up clean in a background check.

“We felt like Alexis was a good fit at the time,” said Benjamin Jordan.

However their confidence in Khan didn’t last too long.

“About five months into her being our baby sitter, we started to notice that our dog was very protective of our son when she would come in the door,” Jordan said. “He was very aggressive towards her and a few times we actually had to physically restrain our dog from going towards her.’

The now suspicious parents had a plan.

Obama Comes Out Against Dog Breed-Specific Legislation, Joins The Fight For Pit Bulls

adminAlerts Leave a Comment

Tails are wagging in Washington this week.

Not only did the Obama family introduce Sunny the puppy to her adoring country, but the White House also came out against breed-specific legislation — regulations and laws that restrict ownership of dogs by breed, pit bulls being the most common target.

Groups like the American Bar Association have said for years that these sorts of restrictions do harm — to families, to dogs, to due process and to the economy — without actually improving public safety.

NEW YORK (WABC) — If you’re under the impression the cameras in city housing projects don’t work, you should take Darryl Walker’s story to heart.

They show him following a woman onto the elevator at the Governor Morris Houses in the Bronx.

That’s where cops say Walker pulled a gun and grabbed the cage.

Vet cares for vets’ pets

COEUR d’ALENE – Larry Greenfelder lovingly caressed his dog’s head and neck as the veterinarian examined her. The Vietnam veteran exchanged glances with his 8-year-old black lab Boo Boo, reassuring her that Dr. Bruce King was not going to take the rawhide she refused to release from her teeth.

Her eyes said she believed him, but she still wouldn’t let it go. Not until the nail clippers were visible.

“She is one of the best dogs,” Greenfelder said, patting the 106-pound dog. He has had Boo Boo since she was about a year old.

Greenfelder is a man of thin frame with a short, gray beard, a man who has seen war and troubled times. He served in the Navy for nine years and was deployed to Vietnam for two six-month tours, where he earned medals such as the Combat Action Ribbon and the Meritorious Unit Citation.
