I heard a so-call animal behaviorist say that pets don't really understand love, they just depend on us.....SO! The question of the day for the radio show is...DO YOUR PETS LOVE YOU?
I think so, too. My yorkie settles under my feet when I'm working in the kitchen so that I have had many close calls regarding falling in order not to step on him. If I think to ask him to move before I might step on him - he will, but he frequently ends up beside my feet again.
My pomeranian can't stand for me to be out of her sight for very long when I'm at home. If I close the door to the bathroom, she will scratch at the door until I open it. She can be out in the back yard and still know if I've closed a door to a room. Within a few seconds, she will be scratching at the door. Fortunately, she doesn't do any damage when my husband and/or I run errands.
Also, I'm the only one that she will allow to hug her for a few seconds. She won't go near anyone else except for a treat or to have her leash put on for a walk.
I do believe there is some bonding that takes place in a pet with it's owner. My pomeranian goes nuts every afternoon when my partner comes home, and it's not because he's hungry. In bed in the evenings, he loves to lick our faces, and that is after a shower so it isn't perspiration he's tasting. It must be some sign of affection. That's what we like to think.
Oh, PULEASE! I know my dogs love me and their human daddy. Their levels of giving love are different, though. Two of them are more demanders/receivers of love. Three of them are definitely love givers. With one of them, it's in a manipulative way, though. He keeps up with the days of the week, and on Daddy's days off, he kisses up to him 'cause he knows that those are the days that he gets to go on especially long walks about the town and go to the flea market.
But I've never received more pure love than I do from Sofia when I come home from a few hours of absence.
