I wish they did, but no, I don't think so. I remember hearing about the part of the brain that is responsible for understanding speech is only in humans. When my dog gets excited, meaning he wants something, and I ask him if he wants this or that, it's difficult to tell by his reactions. I think they understand certain sounds, tone of voice, and body movements, but it's not always accurate. He seems to get "you wanna go out" and "You wanna go up (on the bed)" mixed up. But it's all fun!!

Our two poochions not only understand what we say, they even know if we spell the words. The bigger guy crans his neck to show how he listens and even trys to tell us what he wants. All I have to do is say, "who wants to go for a walk"? they run to where my keys are and the little guy gets his favorite plush toy named sheepie, because he wont go out the door without him. He will drop him and leave it outdoors while we take his walk, but he must take him out with him. If I talk to my daughter and say something regarding them they will jump to attention and start begging for attentions. I tell them when to look at the window for daughter's return, etc etc. The reason I moved in with my daughter was that they would keep me company all day long and they are like real people, I dont care what anyone says to differ.
