Six months ago I adopted a 10 year old boxer named Bruno from a breeder that had to get rid of him. Bruno had been living in a house on Long Island with 3 other dogs, but aside from that, I don't know if he had free rein in the house, was crated, etc. I think he was likely crated. I live in Brooklyn Heights.
Bruno and I bonded instantly. He has had no problem adapting to living in an apartment but he was initially scared to go out for walks. He didn't like the sound of the cars and was suspicious of all of the people that walked past us. He was slowly getting better, until a month ago when he broke loose from me in the park and ran the three blocks from the park to my apartment building. I ran after him but couldn't catch up. Unfortunately, on the way home, he got clipped by a taxi. Thankfully, with the exception of some bruising, he was physically fine. Mentally however, he's a mess. He's fine indoors, but outdoors, he's is flinching when a car passes and he constantly turns his head and looks behind him as he is walking, as if he's afraid of being jumped. After he does his business he turns around and immediately wants to go back home. I've tried walking with liver treats and giving him a treat when we go outside and then, after we go a block, giving him another treat, but he's so nervous that he won't eat. Inside, he would eat the whole box if I let him. He's been to my parents house on Long Island since the accident, and he has no problem with going outside. It's only in NYC. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
