HAVE YOU EVER BEEN CALLED ECCENTRIC BECAUSE OF THE WAY YOU TREAT YOUR PETS?

I have always been an animal fanatic, ever since I can remember. I’ve always felt most comfortable when surrounded by my furry, feathered and finned friends. However, this type of behavior doesn’t come without some consequences. I have been called crazy by people who have never had the opportunity to really understand that special relationship that some people have with their pets. For example, during the recent disasters, we saw people refusing to leave without their pets. Some humans just don’t realize -- that to someone like myself or many of my listeners -- these are not just pets, but part of our family. So the question is: are we crazy, or are we merely more in tune with respecting and loving all of God’s creations?

The Sad Family Saga of Lee and Lode

I own a home in downtown Huntington Beach California.

My wife and I own a Pomeranian named Mercy (Mercedes). We love Mercy like a member of the family.

My unique and rare situation is however not pertaining to my dog but a cat: The cat’s name is Lode.

Lode is a very popular cat on my street (5th street). He is an outdoor cat. When I bought my home on 5th street eight years ago Lode was a cat that been living for four years in the house behind me that my tenant Lee and Mike were renting.

Lee is a wonderful girl from South Africa who loves cats. She considers and Loves Lode as though Lode were her child. She moved out of my home on 5th street three years ago this month. Lee moved exactly one half mile away from my home to main street . Lee’s cat Lode did not take the move very well. Lee moved to main street and the cat stayed behind on 5th st. Lee tried to keep the cat on main street for over 6 months. Lee(or Mike) would come by and pick up the cat from 5th st every night . The next morning the cat after being fed at Lee’s home on Main street would walk back the half mile to 5th st. This went on every day for six months in the first half of 2003. Lee gave up after six months of trying. We were hoping that Lode would return to its owner so we ( James and Sharon) did not feed the cat for all of 2003 and 2004 (other neighbors on 5th street had cats and would feed Lode intentionally or unintentionally) . In July of 2005 , My wife noticed that the people who had fed the Lode had moved away and so she relented and started feeding Lode. The rainy season is starting soon here in Southern California and the cat is probably now about twelve years old.

Now (Oct 2005 ) I would like to return Lode to her heartbroken owner Lee on main street . Any suggestions on how the cat might be willing to stay on main street or is it a lost cause. My wife Sharon says I will break Lee’s heart if I try and return the cat and she will not stay on main street but continues to walk back to 5th st and never walk back to her owner Lee . I am hoping that some miracle can break Lode's habit of walking back to 5th street and never returning to main street. I am hoping that Lode would stay home with her owner and mother Lee.

I don't consider myself and my husband eccentric instead we are blessed: this weekend we adopted our second 100% blind Shitz Zu. Foley joins a rather large family of cats and dogs that special needs that range from diabetes, hyperthyroidism, a cat born with no tongue, another cat that has no sense of smell to mention a few of the more less common special needs. Eccentric no way, we love and respect our family of pets and wouldn't have it any other way. God forbid the day I wake up and am not perfect, my husband just may "turn me in". :)
