A Sailor, a Schnauzer and Warren Eckstein’s Pet Show -- what do they have in common??

Pet Show listeners join together to help one of our heroes

Every week on the Pet Show, I answer lots of questions for pet owners around the country, and I’m frequently thanked for helping the people and the pets that they live with. Well today it is my turn to THANK YOU!!!!!

ArchieOn Saturday July 16th I received a call from a young man living on Long Island who was a member of our Armed Forces. He is a sailor leaving for the Middle East and will be stationed there for six to eight months or maybe longer. He had a legitimate concern about his pet schnauzer Archie, as there was no one to care for the dog during his heroic deployment (by the way, not an uncommon problem for many of our young service members.) He asked if I knew of anyone who could help out him and his beautiful dog; as a last resort, he thought about giving the dog up but just could not bring himself to part with his pal.

I asked my radio audience if they had any ideas or if they could help out. Within minutes of my request my website mail was inundated with people from around America and Canada who had heard the plea and offered to pet sit for this sailor’s dog until his safe return.

As of this moment he is contacting the listeners who responded and will choose the right family to watch his pet, while he’s serving so bravely overseas.

Keep checking the blog for updates on this story and emails I hope to receive from the sailor as he serves his country.

GOD BLESS MY LISTENERS AND GOD BLESS AMERICA

Warren

I think that fostering the pet(s) for the people in the Armed Forces is great and that it should be "advertised" more. One less thing for them to worry about while away from home. Not enough people know about it and it is greatly needed. It would be great if there could be postings of Armed Force personnel needing their pet(s) to be fostered while deployed.

WARREN, FAMILY MEMBER IS GOING THRU AWFUL SAD TIME WITH DOG THAT IS ILL.
LONG STORY SHORT, THIS MAY BE A LONG JOURNEY AND FINANCIALLY OVERWHELMING....I RESCUE MANY PETS OVER THE YEARS, & HAVE PAID HIGH MEDICAL BILLS, AND WOULD DO IT AGAIN AND AGAIN, BUT,IT IS NOT EASY & FOR SOME REALLY IMPOSSIBLE. TO MAKE PEOPLE WHO LOVE THIER PETS HAVE TO DECIDE TO KEEP AN AMIMAL ALIVE OR GO INTO FINANCIAL BANKRUPTSY IS NOTHING SHORT OF CRUEL.
WHY CAN'T VETS CHARGE ON A SLIDING SCALES, INSURANCE HAS NOT BEEN THE ANSWER.
JUST THINKING OF A SENIOR CITIZENS, BEING TOLD IT IS GOING TO RUN 5,000 TO 10,000 TO SAVE THIER CAT.
..AND THEY ARE TRYING TO DECIDE BETWEEN THIER OWN SURVIVAL, IT JUST SEEMS SO INCREDIBLY SAD.
I JUST WANT TO BRING THIS TO YOUR ATTENTION, AND TO ASK YOU, WHAT YOU THINK COULD BE DONE.

HiWarren:

I was listening to the show and heard the exchange...

Now...I think our young military person needs to SERIOUSLY consider having his wonderful BEST FRIEND "neutered", before he leaves to serve his country!

...I say this for many reasons. The main reason...his best friend will remain "healthier"..eliminate the risk of "cancer of his private area"...Secondly, avoid any chance that he might get into a situation while being "boarded" with someone while he is away...an unneutered animal has been known to GO to undetermined LENGTHS to get to a "female in heat"... and we have enough UNWANTED pets being killed every day in our country in the various shelters.

...as he ponders on "doing the right thing"...he must think of what is best for his BEST Friend. Do not send him to a "foster home"..without being NEUTERED.

Thank you!

Hugs and kisses,
Mary and Buffie too!

Dear Warren,

I can't thank you enough for helping me place my mini-schnauzer, Archie, into a loving home for the time being as I deploy to Kuwait with the Navy Cargo Handling Battalion-8 out of Fort Dix, NJ. After chatting with you on the air last month, I've received many responses from all over the northeast, but it turns out that the best pick was a wonderful family from just a few miles away.
Thanks to Connie who was listening on WOR 710 am that day, I just left Archie with Brian and Michelle from Bayshore, LI, NY. They also have a young dog that'll be a perfect playmate for Archie and they have two young teens that'll play and run with the dogs all day. He was so happy when he was there, I swear I could hear him laughing. If dogs could laugh, then I'm sure he was doing just that.
I've had Archie sold three times over, but could not part with him. I didn't think it was fair to give him away, just because I'm leaving for a few months, but what can I do??!!
When I brought Archie to their house, he was off and running all over the yard, having a wonderful time getting acquainted with his adoptive family and their black Labrador.
I will never forget how you've helped me in a bind.
When the military mobilizes personnel, it takes care of the bills, wills and ills (medical issues), but no mention of the pets. With your help, I've met some wonderful people who have 'stepped up to the plate' to help a deploying veteran.
Again, from a Sailor to an Airman, Thanks a million, Brother.
I'll spread the word all over the desert of how you helped me, and I'm sure many military members. You will not be forgotten.

Hey Jeff and Warren,
This is a response due to that I am Alyssa-the teenage daughter of Brian and Michele.I just wanted to let you know that I am soooo happy that Warren had put thi son the air and helped Jeff out because when I heard I was going to be getting another dog I was soo happy. But when i heard I was fostering a dog for a few months for a person ging to fight I had this gut feeling that made me feel even better. Jeff, your dog is great I can't even tell you how much fun he is to play. Ok so get this, I never wake up at 7:30 or 8 but I do to go outside and play with Archie (i would play with my lab but she is a bit on the LAZY side) Speaking of Archie he is on my lap right now watching me type this. But I think he is gonna go crazy when Jeff comes back(haha). So thanks a lot for giving us the chance to take care of your dog.

much appreciation,
Alyssa + my buddy
Archie
